Helen Burfield is one of a small number of postgraduate trained hand therapists in Adelaide and she has over 30 years of experience in upper limb and hand rehabilitation.
Hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder conditions are Helen's areas of expertise. Hand therapy is central to recovery from wrist and arm fractures, hand fractures, tendon repairs, osteoarthritis, De Quervain’s tenosynovitis and wrist instabilities.
Arthritic thumbs are a common condition that can be treated effectively using prescribed splints either custom made or off the shelf along with appropriate exercises. Arthritis requires a certain management plan to assist in protecting and optimizing function and achieving pain relief. This applies to wrist arthritis or any hand arthritis both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
Wrist injuries such as scaphoid fractures or scapho-lunate ligament injuries require the right treatment and exercises to achieve optimum recovery and strength. Tendonitis of the wrist is another common injury often related to computer use and requires expertise to treat effectively.
Tennis elbow (extensor tendinosis) and Golfer’s elbow (flexor tendinosis) are conditions that Helen has a special interest in and utilises a particular program that is effective at treating these often stubborn and difficult conditions.
Shoulder conditions such as subacromial bursitis, tendonitis, rotator cuff tears or repairs, and all upper limb fractures are also part of what we treat.
Sporting injuries of the hand, wrist, elbow or shoulder can be effectively managed and supports made or supplied if required to allow you to get back on the field sooner.
